Our Work
Computer Classes
Classes at Udaan started off initially with Computer classes. We do our best in these classes to teach
students what will help them with their future jobs. Being able to comfortably navigate the uses of a
computer is a vital skill in today’s work environment, nearly every job requires it! At a time when
everyone is learning and working from home due to the pandemic, we need to be able to use online
platforms to attend classes and go about our daily work. Ensuring that our children have this
essential skill is important to us.
English Conversation Classes
We also have English Conversation Classes. At a regular school, children are taught simply to pass an
exam. At Udaan, what we wanted instead was for them to have conversations and know the focus
was not on getting it right the first-time round. It is common for children and adults alike to struggle
with confidence due to their lack of proficiency in the English language. To tackle this issue, we try to
increase their exposure to different types of English speakers by connecting them to people from
other countries and by inviting guests to have conversations with them. This helps to widen their
scope of learning and understanding of how the language works. We teach them reading, writing,
speaking and comprehension. Grammar and rules are learnt best while we read and have
conversations and so we engage them in various different activities. We also watch English movies
together. We particularly enjoy our role play lessons which are effective in helping children pick up
the language as they get to be in a safe environment where they can talk about anything they would
like to. This makes them happy learners! They are more prepared for mainstream jobs once their
language skills are developed.
Other Classes
Along with our Academic and Computer Literacy classes, we have two other categories of classes. These are Arts in Education and Interest Specific classes. The arts classes are aimed at encouraging children to express themselves through different creative faucets and the interest-specific classes are based on children's requests.

Conversations with Professionals
To enhance understanding of the different fields that they could eventually look for a future in, we invite professionals to come and answer questions. In recent times, a model and actor (Arvin Tucker) came in to share his experience in modelling, acting and photography. A journalist (Rohit Khanna) was another individual who came in and spoke to the children about his experiences in the field of journalism. Many such professionals have been invited to speak to the children including a lawyer, a police officer, an army official, a filmmaker, a travel agent and so on. These sessions provide genuinely useful information to the children. What better way to decide which road to take than talking to people who have already travelled!
Educational trips
We take our students on trips to have memorable experiences relevant to educational topics they
are learning. Before the lockdown we took students to Old Delhi, Nehru Planetarium, Book Fairs and
other such places. We take students for trips to see the situations others around the city are dealing
with and living through as well. One such trip was to a café run by acid attack survivors in Agra. The
children come back with many different observations and thoughts about their experience. We
believe these trips hold a lot of value as children get to witness first-hand topics they talk about later
in class. It creates impactful memories.
Samvaad - Navigating Life
Our Udaan is a family, we look after the children who learn with us as we would look after our own kin. We try to teach and manage matters in a manner by which children absorb values that will shape them into being kind and thoughtful leaders in the future. We want our children to listen to each other with curiosity, with the knowledge that each person can have a point of view and with the wisdom to respect differences. We show our children movies which are followed by detailed, long drawn conversations breaking down underlying social messages. This we found to be an excellent method to expose them to ideas that are unfamiliar to them. It is also a superb way to develop their vocabulary!
We also remind them to take responsibility over their actions. We do not accept tardiness, or a lack of commitment to classes chosen. Teaching students to hold themselves accountable for their lapses has a long lasting effect.
We seek to find out what children are interested in learning and to provide a safe atmosphere wherein they could explore these interests. A place where children and young adults, who do not have the means or exposure, get to sit together. We want our students and teachers to grow, always ask questions, keep learning and hold dear the little things and to look at the world with love, compassion and respect.
